Howard Brown
Carlsbad, NM

Howard Brown and his wife Donna were both born and raised in New Mexico. The artist grew up an avid outdoorsman with an appreciation for the beauty around him. Attending college in Alaska, Howard began what was to become a life long love of painting as he took in the majestic beauty he found there. Beginning with small watercolors, he found that he enjoyed the creative process. Howard has continued to paint, expanding his knowledge and experience. His subject matter is diverse, however the landscape continues to be his primary area of interest. The artist continues to push himself to go beyond the ordinary and develop a critical eye to see and express the effect of light upon the subject.

Howard often paints on location doing small field studies. The artist has learned to work quickly, but thoughtfully to capture the changing light conditions. This information is then used when doing larger studio pieces. Working from life is essential to growth and provides feedback that a photograph cannot. He believes that producing a fine art work comes from experience combined with the knowledge gained through observation, understanding, and persistence. Gradually he learned the basic principles through trial and error, studying art, and workshops that have provided a solid foundation for successful painting. "I have to regularly get out of the studio to paint and observe for my inspiration," he says. His love of the outdoors is clearly evident in his work which is now found in collections throughout North America, England, and Japan.

"Nature provides the opportunity, the artist must be prepared"
